The day of your move is filled with a lot of excitement and emotions. You are mourning of the loss of one location and the memories you built there. At the same time, you are excited for the new hope and possibilities in another home. No matter what part of the emotional spectrum you find yourself on, you will likely feel stressed and overwhelmed.

A moving day kit will supply you with items and accessories to get through the process and ensure the move goes smoothly. Learn exactly what to prepare in the kit and how to have a positive moving day experience.

Kit Container

The versatility of a moving day kit gives you opportunities to choose multiple kit options. You may have an extra box or plastic tote lying around to use as a kit. Reusable shopping bags are durable and can handle a lot of weight for your moving kit items. Ensure you have something that can hold multiple items and is easy to transport from one home to the next.

Once you select the storage option, label the kit so you do not mix the container with other moving boxes and supplies.

Dining Items

As you go from one house to the next, you will probably get hungry and have limited access to your kitchen cutlery, pots, pans, and food. Also, the last thing you want to do on your first day in a new house is worry about getting extra dishes done. Your kit should contain disposable forks, knives, spoons, paper plates, and napkins.

The amount of items depends on how many people are involved with the move. Consider the use of biodegradable cutlery if you can find the items. The extra effort will reduce waste buildup in landfills. You should also include some quick snack options within the kit. Individual bags of chips, granola bars, or fresh fruits will give everyone some grab-and-go snack items.

The quick snacks will reduce hunger and give you an extra boost of energy. Add in small bottles of water as well so you have beverages when needed. You will not need to delay the move to go to a grocery store or make a quick snack run.

Magnetic Checklists

Simple in design, a magnetic checklist will provide you with easy ways to jot down notes and see reminders. Once you arrive at your new home, you can place the magnetic checklist notepad right on the fridge and see the list every time you enter the new kitchen.

The upfront visuals are more ideal than a list on your phone, and everyone involved with the move can easily read the list. Write down things you need to do, accomplish, and unpack. With each completed item, you will feel a sense of satisfaction and will keep the process moving along.

Small Tool Sets

As you settle down in the home, you may need access to tools to set up some items quickly. A kit doesn't need to have your whole tool box, but a few smaller tools are useful for some of the items you need to set up.

For example, you may need to take a door off its hinges to move larger items into a house or a specific room. You may need to set up a small shelf or attach pieces to a desk. A small flashlight will help you see dark areas as you plug in devices, connect cables, or access areas like deep closets and basements.

Ideally, your kit should include a small multi-bit screwdriver, an Allen wrench set, a flashlight, and a small hammer. After your move, you can keep the kit in a kitchen drawer so you can use it for small repairs in the future.

Moving Accessories

A kit should also include small accessories. Labels and markers allow you to keep track of items like boxes. Write out quick labels for specific rooms and keep all the boxes properly organized. A roll of duct tape or packing tape will provide extra reinforcements if you need to secure a box and keep it closed.

A pair of gloves will make it easier to lift and grip items like boxes or electronics. Extra gloves allow helpers to have a pair if needed. Consider the use of disposable shoe booties so you do not drag dirt or mud inside a new house. If you have to move during bad weather, the booties will add extra protection.

First-Aid Kits

A small first-aid kit is useful in case of cuts, scratches, and other small injuries. As you move and unpack items, you never know when an injury will occur. The last thing you want is to have blood drip on the surface of a new flood. A first-aid kit will provide you and others with bandages and cleaning wipes to cover up cuts and quickly move on with the unpacking process.

Before the TCJA, moving expenses could be deducted if the move was related to starting a new job and met certain distance and time requirements. However, this deduction is now suspended for tax years 2018 through 2025 for most taxpayers. If you are a member of the military, you may still be able to deduct moving expenses. Here are the conditions under which moving expenses are deductible: 1. **Member of the Armed Forces**: You must be an active-duty member of the Armed Forces. 2. **Move due to Military Order**: The move must be due to a military order and a permanent change of station. If you believe you qualify for this deduction, it's a good idea to consult IRS Publication 521, "Moving Expenses," or speak with a tax professional to ensure you meet all the necessary requirements.
