What Type of Moving Expenses Can You Deduct?

Jul 30, 2024

Before the TCJA, moving expenses could be deducted if the move was related to starting a new job and met certain distance and time requirements. However, this deduction is now suspended for tax years 2018 through 2025 for most taxpayers.

If you are a member of the military, you may still be able to deduct moving expenses. Here are the conditions under which moving expenses are deductible:

1. **Member of the Armed Forces**: You must be an active-duty member of the Armed Forces.

2. **Move due to Military Order**: The move must be due to a military order and a permanent change of station.

If you believe you qualify for this deduction, it's a good idea to consult IRS Publication 521, "Moving Expenses," or speak with a tax professional to ensure you meet all the necessary requirements.
