7 Things to Do on Moving Day

January 20, 2023

Hiring movers is usually the best move to ensure the safe transport of your possessions. However, you must do a few things on moving day to help the movers do their jobs and keep themselves from getting overwhelmed. Below are seven things to do on relocation day.

1. Wake Up Early

The moving day often arrives with numerous last-minute tasks to complete. So, rise with the dawn to finish everything before the movers arrive and avoid rushing through things. A healthy breakfast is also necessary because you need plenty of stamina to get through the day. If your morning coffee prepares you for the day, squeeze in time to enjoy one before you start.

2. Keep Children and Pets Away

While teenagers can help with moving-day activities, smaller children are typically a distraction. Children and pets could also get injured playing with moving supplies, and you should keep away from the movers' path as they carry heavy items.

Organize for friends and families to look after your kids and pets and get them to the agreed areas before movers arrive. You can also keep the children in a safe space and get a sitter to watch and engage them.

3. Wear Appropriate Clothes

Appropriate clothes reduce the risk of injury and make you more productive. So, wear sturdy shoes with anti-slip soles and ankle support, and avoid baggy clothes that can snag on something and cause falls.

Long-sleeved t-shirts and long pants are great because they protect from scrapes and bumps. Choose a breathable fabric to keep you cool through the day, and wear work gloves. You will also find it easier to work if you have long hair and tie it back.

4. Finish Up Packing

If you only hired the movers to load, transport, and unload your stuff, finish packing before they get into your home. Pack the bedding and pajamas your family slept in and the toiletries you used in the morning.

Then, go to the kitchen, pack perishable items, and throw away anything that will go bad or melt before you get to your new home. Resist the urge to throw kitchen utensils in a box without proper wrapping because they may get damaged during the move. Go through each area in the home, including the guest house, attic, basement, cabinets, and storage nooks, to ensure you have left nothing behind.

5. Set Your Essentials Bag Aside

An essentials bag contains things you require on moving day and the next day, including electronics, chargers, toiletries, medications, extra clothes, keys, and documents. Also, keep valuable items in the bag, such as family heirlooms and jewelry.

However, movers can accidentally load your essentials suitcase into the truck if you keep it together with other boxes. Keep your personal items in a separate, locked room to control access.

6. Greet and Moderate Your Movers

When your movers arrive, take them on a walk-through of your home, identifying fragile boxes and appliances and showing them the bathroom. Also, clear the movers' pathway, as they need enough space to maneuver boxes.

Stay around to give your movers extra instructions, such as neighborhood parking restrictions, the furniture they should disassemble, and the boxes that need loading first. Additionally, provide water and snacks, and tip your movers if you are happy with the service.

7. Do a Final Walk-Through

Once the movers have loaded your boxes, furniture, and appliances in the moving trucks, walk around the house and open all drawers and closets. No matter how meticulous you are, you may forget some overlooked items in little-used areas. If you have to clean the house, put cleaning supplies aside before your movers start packing or hire a cleaning company.

Before the TCJA, moving expenses could be deducted if the move was related to starting a new job and met certain distance and time requirements. However, this deduction is now suspended for tax years 2018 through 2025 for most taxpayers. If you are a member of the military, you may still be able to deduct moving expenses. Here are the conditions under which moving expenses are deductible: 1. **Member of the Armed Forces**: You must be an active-duty member of the Armed Forces. 2. **Move due to Military Order**: The move must be due to a military order and a permanent change of station. If you believe you qualify for this deduction, it's a good idea to consult IRS Publication 521, "Moving Expenses," or speak with a tax professional to ensure you meet all the necessary requirements.
