5 Ways to Organize Items Inside a Moving Container

Shauna Washburn • November 3, 2020

Renting a moving truck requires you to drive, operate, and park the large truck in an ideal unloading location. As you plan your move, you can save a lot of time and hassle with a moving container instead of a truck. The container is parked right in front of the home. Once filled, a truck picks up the container and drops it off at your new home for easy unloading options.

As you plan out your container use, you want to make the most out of the available space. Follow tips and trick to organize items, save a lot of space, and get the full value out of the container rental.

1. Pack Carpets First

Before you begin to load the container, the first thing you should focus on are the carpets. If you are moving throw carpets, area rugs, or floor mats, you can save a lot of space by placing the items flat down on the bottom of the container. If you were to roll up the carpets, you would take up a lot of space and the carpets would suddenly become bulky.

Once you lay the carpets flat, add a little protection with a plastic protective cover or film. You could also lay out a large sheet you don't mind getting stepped on or dirty. Once you unload the container, the carpets will remain flat, and you do not have to worry about any curled edges or creases that may occur when the carpet is rolled up.

2. Place Furniture Face-Up

After you lay the carpets inside the moving container, your next focus should be on bulky furniture. When you place furniture inside the moving container, try to keep the furniture facing straight up. The open spaces on couches, tables, and chairs will give you plenty of room to stack boxes and other small items on.

Fill the whole bottom layer of the moving container with the furniture. Save a little extra space by removing cushions from couches and chairs. You can easily fit the cushions inside the backseat of a vehicle and use the extra space to store additional items.

3. Use Open Totes

As you fill up a moving container, you should keep an open plastic tote right on the outside of the container. The plastic tote will help you store little items as you go. Also keep plastic zip-up baggies with the container. For example, if you have a computer to pack, you can place power cords into a plastic bag, label the bag, and toss the bag into the tote.

As you move furniture and other items, small parts might fall off or you may remove them to save space. For example, you may remove plastic bed risers from the bottom of a bed frame. By labeling and placing the items in a single tote, you will easily find the items as you unpack your home.

When you keep the tote next to the container, you can stay organized and do not have to delay your packing.

4. Hang Magnetic Hooks

The inside of a moving container is often reinforced with protective steel beams to keep items safe while the container travels from one destination to another. Take advantage of the steel beams with the use of heavy duty magnetic hooks. As you pack up the container, you can use the hooks to hang items and keep them secure for the duration of the move.

For example, if you pack extension cords, charging cables, or other cords, you can hang them directly on the hooks and not worry about tangles or issues. The magnetic hooks can also hold lighter bags with items.

Larger hooks will help you organize and keep track of long items. You can evenly space out three hooks across the side of the moving container. The hooks can hold items like pool cues, weed trimmers, rakes, shovels, and other long tools. Utilize the magnetic system on both sides of the container to fit more items.

When you hang items on the side, you will save a lot of room in the middle to fit bulkier items.

5. Place Mattresses Last

At first, you may feel inclined to place a mattress on the bottom of the moving container. Not only does a thick mattress take up a lot of space, but other furniture could impact mattress springs and cause possible warping. If you leave a little ceiling space inside the moving container, then you can place the mattress right on top of the other items.

The mattress will not have pressure and can slide right into the top. Once the container is delivered to your new location, you can easily pull out the mattress first, place it in the home and continue the rest of the unpacking process. If you have a box spring to pack, place the box spring first and then the mattress on top.

Before the TCJA, moving expenses could be deducted if the move was related to starting a new job and met certain distance and time requirements. However, this deduction is now suspended for tax years 2018 through 2025 for most taxpayers. If you are a member of the military, you may still be able to deduct moving expenses. Here are the conditions under which moving expenses are deductible: 1. **Member of the Armed Forces**: You must be an active-duty member of the Armed Forces. 2. **Move due to Military Order**: The move must be due to a military order and a permanent change of station. If you believe you qualify for this deduction, it's a good idea to consult IRS Publication 521, "Moving Expenses," or speak with a tax professional to ensure you meet all the necessary requirements.
